Nursling 400kV Shunt Reactor 2 Installation

National Grid identified the need to design, install and commission a 60Mvar shunt reactor connecting to the existing 400/132kV SGT 2. This consisted of modifying the existing SGT2 13kV tertiary bushings to extend them outside of the existing brick noise enclosure. The project also included the construction of new civils, installation of a new 60Mvar shunt reactor, a new 13kV AIS Bay, new protection for the bay and SHR and an extension of the existing substation controls system.

Omnia Projects supported the Principal Contractor with the Project Management and Health & Safety support function throughout the project from contract award to completion, including survey outages.

First Access to site was received for the main construction works to commence on the 24th September 2016 and construction works were scheduled for 37 weeks to meet an energisation date of the 7th July 2017, which was achieved along with all other project key milestone dates along the way.

New 60Mvar shunt reactor installed in a new bund

The civils work consisted of a new bund for the shunt reactor, new AIS foundations, an extension of the existing SGT2 bund, cable ducts, drainage, fencing, gates, below ground earthing and external lighting columns. The foundations of which were supported by 70No CFA piles to the depth of 10m.

New dead tank circuit breaker

The tertiary modification consisted of removing the existing bushings and adding an oil filled turret to the tertiary connection. This then contained submerged copper busbars that were connected inside the existing SGT tertiary. The new turret carried those connections to new bushings outside the SGT noise enclosure to enable the 13kV bay to connect the SGT2 tertiary.

New MEWP crossing and bund access

The 13kV AIS bay included the design and installation of a double-sided disconnector / integral earth switch, earthing transformer, dead tank circuit breaker, standalone earth switch, surge arresters, post insulators busbars and connectors.
