The London Power Tunnels 2 (LPT2) project is a flagship infrastructure initiative led by National Grid, designed to modernise and reinforce the electricity transmission network across London.
Spanning over 32.5km, the tunnel system runs deep below the capital and provides a secure, reliable and future-proofed route for high-voltage cables. The project ensures the continued safe and efficient delivery of electricity to homes and businesses while enabling London’s transition to a low-carbon energy system. Omnia Projects Limited was appointed as the Design Assurance Engineer (Civil) for key elements of the project at New Cross and Bengeworth Road, acting on behalf of National Grid to ensure technical compliance, integration, and delivery quality across various engineering disciplines.
Omnia Projects was responsible for the technical design assurance, ensuring that all design submissions aligned with National Grid’s Technical Specifications and Design Handbooks, while meeting the civil scope requirements defined by the project.
New Cross Site
At the New Cross headhouse location, Omnia Projects conducted detailed design reviews and compliance checks for a wide range of building services and mechanical systems, including:
- Headhouse Ventilation and HVAC Systems
- Interface Schematics (cross-discipline coordination and integration)
- Lighting Control Panels
- Electrical Building Services Design
- Security & CCTV System Design
- Pumped Tunnel Drainage System
Bengeworth Road Site
For Bengeworth Road, Omnia Projects held direct responsibility for approving the following design packs:
- Civil Layouts
- Roads and Footpaths
- Oil Containment Systems
- Drainage Systems
- GIS Building
- LVAC Building
- Supergrid Transformer Bund
- Ducting and Troughs
- Fencing
- Site Services
Each of these systems was reviewed to ensure safety, maintainability, and compatibility with adjacent infrastructure, alongside alignment with National Grid’s operational requirements.
