Kingsnorth 400kv Substation

National Grid are undertaking a project to allow a 300MW data centre to connect into Kingsnorth 400kV substation in Kent. Omnia projects were engaged to complete Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) on a new transformer compound including two 400/33kV transformers per circuit for the data centre connection.

Kingsnorth 400kV Substation is an indoor 400kV AIS substation with a GIS extension on either end of the substation. One of the new circuits will be connected to an existing spare bay within the 400kV AIS building ,while the second bay will be populated in the GIS hall in the north of the substation transitioning to a non SF6 clean gas alternative.

The multi-discipline FEED package on this project included:

  • Surveys (GPR, Topographical, Existing Utilities, Ground Investigation and Flood Risks)
  • Primary Engineering (Stage by Stage diagrams, Layout plans, Elevations, Single Line diagram and O&M access drawings)
  • Protection and Control (Key Line diagram)
  • Civil Design package (Drainage, Earth works and Civil General Arrangement drawings)
  • HV Cable (Route plans, Typical Sections, High Risk Crossing plans and a high level CYMCAP study)
  • Construction Design Specifications (CDS) including HV plant, Protection and Control, Civil and HV Cable.
  • Detailing SF6 free transition bay requirements
  • Customer Liaison of Bay Design
