As part of the Design & Project Services Framework with National Grid, Omnia Projects was contracted in March 2023 to undertake the design works for the replacement of high-voltage (HV) assets under the Interventions programme. These essential upgrades ensure the continued reliability of the UK’s electricity transmission network. Omnia Projects were awarded contracts for the North East and South West regions, covering all interventions to be delivered as part of the RIIO-T2 business plan.
The primary objective of the project is to replace ageing HV assets with minimal impact on the associated infrastructure. However, due to the complexity of these systems, the work often requires modifications to high-voltage connections, equipment structures, earthing, and light current systems. The design works involve replacing and refurbishing various critical HV assets, including:
- Circuit Breakers
- Disconnector Refurbishments
- Instrument Transformers
- Through Wall Bushings
- Disconnector Replacements
- Surge Arrestors
- Earth Switches
Each intervention is designed to maintain network resilience, ensuring that new equipment is integrated effectively while minimising operational disruptions. As part of the project, we have been utilising LIDAR technology to create 3D models for complex sites and areas where discrepancies in drawing records have been identified. This approach ensures accuracy and allows us to verify that suitable design clearances can be achieved.
As we approach two years into the project, Omnia Projects has successfully completed 264 interventions, with an additional 244 currently in progress. The efficient execution of these design works demonstrates our commitment to delivering quality engineering around a very dynamic workbook. Our ongoing work under this contract plays a key role in reinforcing the UK's electricity transmission network, supporting the transition to a more sustainable and modern energy system. The project also contributes to the long-term reliability of National Grid’s infrastructure, ensuring that power continues to be delivered securely and efficiently.
