Hatfield 66kV Overhead Line & Cable Diversion

Northern Powergrid received a request from Doncaster Metropolitan District Council to undertake a diversion scheme of two sections of a 66kV overhead line and cable circuit to facilitate the construction of a new Link Road from the M18 Junction 5 interchange with the M180 through to Waggons Way Stainforth adjacent to Hatfield Colliery.

The existing Thorpe Marsh – Stainforth – Thorne 66kV overhead line circuit was routed though the proposed development site, and crosses the Hatfield railway line. Land to the north west of the railway forms part of the old Hatfield colliery site, and land to the south of the railway is arable farm land.

Omnia separated the works into several project stages based around the Northern Powergrid outage and ERTS times and the Network Rail track possessions. Each stage detailed the works to be enacted, resourcing, outage durations and ERTS times. This enabled the Client to demonstrate fully that the requirements of each stakeholder were able to be maintained throughout the duration of the works, with a particular focus on the overhead line and cable interface points.

Omnia Projects working on behalf of the Northern Powergrid Framework Supplier, completed the FEED (Front End Engineering Design) and project planning for the works. This involved design, with particular focus on the interface between technologies and consideration of Northern Powergrid Outage sequences, Emergency Return to Service (ERTS) times, testing and commissioning, and resource restraints in addition to Doncaster Metropolitan District Council programme for the new link road and Network Rail track possessions.

Network Rail Track Possession & Crossing

This customer driven scheme required the Thorpe Marsh – Stainforth – Thorne three ended 66kV feeder circuit to be diverted to facilitate the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council’s (DBMC) highway construction programme. The works involved both overhead line and cable installation requiring significant coordination with third parties including Network Rail, landowners and local councils. The project was developed to maintain a strict 12hour emergency return to service (ERTS) from Northern Powergrid.
