We've recently enhanced our HV cable design capability with the addition of a second CYMCAP software licence and 3D thermal modelling software module.

This means that Omnia design engineers around the UK can now handle complex cable installations with increased ease, efficiency, and accuracy.

This IT and software upgrade and allows us to work simultaneously on two projects at once, and along with our new 3D thermal modelling module, allows our engineers to better reflect how cables are actually installed on site.

This is crucial in congested areas like substations and urban environments, where multiple circuits can cross, bend, or change depth along the cable route.

By modelling the full cable route in 3D, we can:

  • See how heat builds up along the length of the cable, not just at a single point.
  • Understand temperature variations caused by crossings, tight spaces, and changes in alignment with greater accuracy.
  • Work out exactly where thermal constraints could occur along the length of a cable and why.

This upgrade marks an exciting development in our design process, keeping our teams at the cutting edge of digital engineering technology. With a clearer picture of real operating conditions, we can optimise cable layouts, avoid unecessary conservatism and provide clients increased assurance that cable systems will remain safe and reliable throughout their lifetime, even if installation has been difficult.
